As the late, great personal development guru Jim Rohn put it, “You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight”, “Now is the time to fix the next 10 years.”

New Year’s Day is one of my favorite days of the year where each of us has the opportunity to reflect on the previous year’s events and chart a new course for the future by setting our intentions and goals for the upcoming year.  Of course, we can choose to do that any day of the year, but there’s something magical about the start of a new calendar year.

January 1st is also a time when many of us look in the mirror and decide that it’s time to get our body back in shape after all of the holiday celebrations with family and friends.  While many have heard estimates that the typical American gains 5 pounds over the Holiday season, the good news is that it usually isn’t that bad.  Studies have found that the average American gains 1.3 pounds during the Christmas – New Year’s season.  The bad news is that many people start ramping up food consumption in late October with Halloween candy, followed by November Thanksgiving feasts, and research suggests that it can take more than five months to lose the weight gained over the holidays.

Fortunately, no matter how much damage you did over the Holidays, it only takes a few lifestyle changes to get your health and waistline back on track.

If health and fitness is an area that you’ve been neglecting, now is the time to commit to making it a priority in your life and chart a new path in the direction of optimal physical and mental well-being.
